OxfordBands.com Demo Review
In a recent live review of local soft rock quartet Outcry, I described them as a hybrid of Interpol and Elton John. I realise that such a description may not be the most needle-sharp and that the faithful readership of Oxbands demands more. Can I do better when describing their recorded work?
Before I do, you should know that Outcry are mixed up with some of the least cool institutions in modern England, namely "Britain's Got Talent" and Jamie Oliver (who listed them as one of his twenty four favourite unsigned bands. Remember that this was the man that gave Toploader a career before attaching any importance to this endorsement). Still, let's keep an open mind.
On balance, I like about half of it. David McMahon is an intuitive, soulful singer and on potent, minor-key songs like "Lonely Nights" and "Darkness" he exudes charisma and class. He is backed by highly competent musicians who sometimes betray their callowness by egregious Santanaesque guitar solos and piano glissandos, but there is plenty here for a decent producer to work with. There's nothing very new, but it's stylish and unusual for Oxford. If you only listen to a single Outcry song, try the excellent %quot;Lonely Nights" which boasts a superb Otis Redding-influenced vocal which even betrays a touch of acridity at some points. This will no doubt distress Simon Cowell. Fuck 'im.
In contrast, best steer clear of glutinous ballads such "Diehard Lover", unless you are compiling a "Friday Afternoon Cheese" CD. Other numbers are hard to remember, such as the competent but colourless "Moving" which brings us far too close to Elton John (dismissed, superbly, in about 1973 by Robert Christgau as a "puling phoney"- can anyone add anything?). The acoustic guitar solos on this song are of the sort that you used to get at 22.55 on Channel Five before it got all Tim Marlowe-and-public-service on us.
As I say, half of this is worth hearing. Sometimes innocuous, sometimes cynically commercial, Outcry nevertheless have a few big tunes which a monster audience can enjoy. If they go on to success, let's hope they do it the right way, by which I mean building up an organic following, rather than winning the theatre of stupidity that is BGT. And hopefully Jamie Oliver will have been long-since throttled by an irate Rotherham pie eater when their first record goes platinum.

OxfordBands.com Gig Review (The Wheatsheaf - 27th September 2008)
Bicester's Outcry is an ambitious four-piece who deliver a strange but wholesome confection pitched midway between Interpol and Elton John. The former are evoked principally in Joe O'Neill's downstrummed guitar picks and the latter in Mark Roberts' solid if unspectacular low-end piano playing. To be fair to him, the absence of a bass player forced him to take this role so that the bottom didn't drop out- to be honest, I could see no legitimate artistic reason for dispensing with the bassist- for a band clearly intent on mass appeal, they need to fill this hole.
The fact that Outcry have it in them to conquer Radio 1 (or more likely Radio 2) is largely down to their muscle-bound frontman David McMahon, whose voice evokes everyone from the previously-mentioned bespectacled national treasure to Robbie Williams and Fine Young Cannibals' Roland Gift. He's even a decent rapper, so far as I could make out: the Wheatsheaf's sound system turned most of his spoken output into so much aural sago. Still, he has presence, range, control and strength and with all that, I expect Outcry to get a good deal bigger in the future. One last thing: a cabal in the audience (I'm guessing MAGS: Mums and Girlfriends) applauded through the intros as if it really were Elton or Robbie up there rather than four nervous newbies from North Oxon. Sweet.

Vodafone National Music Nomination
Outcry from Oxford have been nominated for the Live and Unsigned award at the prestigious Vodafone Live Music Awards taking place on 18th September 2008. The Vodafone Live Music Awards celebrate a year in live music and will be hosted by Steve Jones and Juliette Lewis.
The ceremony will take place at the Carling Academy in Brixton on the 18th of September 2008 and is set to be a star studded event with performances confirmed so far from The Ting Tings and Estelle and other surprises on the night. The Awards will be held in front of a specially invited audience of thousands of celebrities and music industry professionals and lucky competition winners. The winning act will be announced on the night and will be invited on stage to collect their trophy from guest Presenters from the World of music and entertainment.
Future music are partnering the award for the UK's best Unsigned Act. Future music currently organise Live and Unsigned; a national music competition for unsigned bands and singers. The competition is the biggest music talent search in the UK for original and live music.
Chris Grayston, Managing Director of Future music explains "We are always interested in discovering and exposing unsigned talent in the UK, we have such a strength and depth of musical ability in this country which we should acknowledge and celebrate. These awards are such an exciting opportunity to all Nominees with press exposure, A & R at the final, let alone looking great on the CV. It's great that a Company such as Vodafone are not just supporting established acts but also encouraging and acknowledging unsigned talent in the UK."
Vodafone sponsorship Manager for the UK Belinda Stevenson "We are very excited to be working with Live and Unsigned at the Vodafone Live Music Awards 2008. They are a great fit for our Unsigned Act award and we look forward to discovering some big talent together."
The unsigned winning act on the night will be thrust into the media spotlight through television, radio and the press. Not only will they be involved in interviews with over 100 journalists in the media centre at the ceremony, including an interview with XFM, they will additionally be featured on T4's overall coverage of the event, broadcasted on Sunday 21st September. Whilst the winning act gets to take away the trophy on the night, the short listed nominated acts will also receive invites to both the awards and the highly exclusive after show party.
With maximum exposure and publicity for all acts involved, Outcry will no doubt have their fan base galvanised to attend and support at the Awards, including eager family and friends to support their bid for this exciting opportunity. Hopefully with local and national support Outcry will land the prestigious title of the UK's best Unsigned act come the 18th September.

Outcry Winners at National Music Awards!
Outcry from Oxfordshire achieved fourth place at the National Final of Live and Unsigned. From over 10,000 registered applicants, Outcry battled through to the grand final and stormed the competition competing initially in the Birmingham heats.
|
 |
The grand final was a showcase of the very best unsigned talent from across the UK, with each act representing themselves and their own region.
The grand final, held in Fairfield Halls, Croydon was a star studded event, boasting thousands of audience members including celebrities and professionals from the music industry witnessing the unsigned battle of the year.
The judges, alongside an energized audience, voted Outcry fourth overall for the competition on the day. Chris Grayston, judge on the night and head of A&R at Future Music commented "I can't believe the standard of talent today, we've seen these acts come so far throughout the competition and their development and strengths have been really evident- the competition was tough, very tough, but I know we've chosen the right winners. What's even more amazing is before the competition Outcry hadn't done a gig!"
Also on the judging panel was legend of the charts, Mark Goodier, who was stunned with the level of professionalism and talent "I'm shocked all these acts are unsigned! This event was so professional; it was a showcase of extremely talented individuals who I can see appearing in the Top 40 for many years to come."
Live and Unsigned is a national music competition for unsigned acts and singers to compete live. It stands as the biggest music talent search in the UK for original music. The competition encourages the contestants to do their own thing; be individual, original, perform their own genre and style Live. Therefore, all contestants that appeared in the grand London Final performed original songs and flaunted their own style and preferences.
An act that did just that was B-kay and Kazz, who were last year's winners of the competition. The brothers are now on the cusp of releasing their single 'You Know it's right'' which is released on the 21st July. Auditions for Live and Unsigned 2009 begin in January 2009 across the UK. The competition is for all unsigned acts, bands or solos for more information go to www.LiveandUnsigned.Uk.com. Check out Outcry at www.outcryonline.co.uk |
